Joshua and Jake Heggie perform the live chamber premiere of Songs for Murdered Sisters, in partnership with Houston Grand Opera, at the Rothko Chapel as part of their Songs for Justice series, on March 8 at 7pm. This brilliant new work by Jake Heggie and Margaret Atwood was conceived by Mr. Hopkins to honor his sister Nathalie and wake people up to the global epidemic of gender-based violence. Co-commissioned by Houston Grand Opera and Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, the song cycle features original poems by celebrated Canadian novelist and poet Margaret Atwood confronting violence against women. The premiere at Rothko Chapel includes a post-performance discussion with the composer, Joshua and Khori Dastoor, General Director and Chief Executive Officer of Houston Grand Opera, and is moderated by Alexandra Smither, soprano and Communications Coordinator at Houston in Action.
